Accessibility in Little Waves

The App Store shows a row of accessibility labels for Little Waves Contraction Timer with no room to explain them. This page says in plain words what each one means, and is honest about where we have checked less.

On iPhone

What we checked

  • Text size. Every screen grows to the largest accessibility text size the app allows, which is 235 percent of the default. Nothing clips or overlaps at that size, in light or dark mode.
  • VoiceOver. Every control has a name and a role. The ring says one of three things and nothing else: "Ready, start contraction", "Contraction started, tap to stop", or "Resting, start contraction". The running clock is one swipe away. History entries read as sentences, not fragments. Every task in the app was completed with VoiceOver alone.
  • Voice Control. Every common task was completed by voice alone, including the time fields on the edit sheet and the undo bar.
  • Colour is never the only signal. Where a colour means something, a word sits beside it: mild, moderate and strong beside the discs in the record, and a "Felt" column in words on the printed report. The chart carries no colour meaning at all, because bar height is length and position is time. We checked every screen and the paper with the system colour filter on.
  • Contrast. Every text-and-background pair the app draws was measured in both modes against the 4.5:1 floor for text and 3:1 for everything else, including the app's translucent sheets and the PDF. All are above their floor.
  • Motion. The app's only motion is a short fade. With Reduce Motion on, nothing that matters changes, because there was nothing to reduce. Nothing flashes.
  • Dark mode. Follows your device's setting, with its own measured colours. To switch during labour, use Control Centre; the app deliberately has no switch of its own.
  • Sound. The app makes no sound it depends on. Everything works with the device silent.
  • Touch targets. Every control is at least 44 points across, and the ring is the whole middle of the screen.
On Apple Watch

Checked on the wrist

The Watch app was checked at the largest watch text size, in Always-On, and by voice, on the largest watch face sold. Smaller faces were not part of the check.

Where we have checked less: iPad

Little Waves runs on iPad, and its text size, dark mode, motion and contrast were checked there on Apple's simulator, because the studio owns no iPad. VoiceOver and Voice Control have not yet been walked on an iPad, so those two labels are not declared for iPad until they are.
